The John Lobb factory is a legendary manufacturers in the British shoemaking hub of Northampton, a city that became famous as a shoemaking capital in the 17th century. Although the brand has been under Hermes since 1976, the factory is dedicated to preserving the craft techniques developed in the 19th century.Modern machines are present but secondary. For instance, leather cutting is still performed by hand rather than with lasers. Instead, plastic templates are produced, which are handed to clickers. Their title comes from the characteristic snap of the knife touching the cutting table. With traditional knives, they cut the hides manually.
Production is limited, with only no more than five hundred pairs made each week. This approach gives the sense of one-of-a-kind production. Employees often handle many designs in a single day, instead of repeating one routine step like in mass-production plants. Every shoe is built with Goodyear welted technology, allowing a leaky sole to be removed without damaging the upper.
In line with Hermes, John Lobb uses exceptional materials, particularly from young French calf hides. Only 60% of each hide is appropriate for main shoe parts, while the remainder becomes smaller accessories.
The line combines heritage designs with contemporary tweaks. The classic City II model, for instance, were slightly reshaped. The Sennen double monks gained elongated straps and a thicker sole. The Lopez model, introduced in the 1950s, received subtle color and sole innovations. Newer icons include the Porth model and the Levah trainers, which are offered annually in a mix of colors and materials.
Through its balance of heritage and innovation, John Lobb stands as a defining name in world-class shoemaking.
