August 2014: Task Group Exercise 2-14, including port go to to Mayport, Florida. Athabaskan returned to her activity group and remained on station in the Persian Gulf till after the battle ended. After Operation Desert Storm started in January 1991, the task group undertook escort duties for hospital ships and different vulnerable naval vessels of the coalition. Unlike most ships of her dimension, Athabaskan might concurrently function two large CH-124 Sea King helicopters, which might search out mines for long intervals.
