During a meal, your liver will store sugar, or glucose, as glycogen for a later time when your body needs it. The excess sugar may also be converted into fatty acids, circulated to other parts of the body and stored as fat. Excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of a host of serious medical problems, such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Let's not sugarcoat the reason the government has turned its attention to weight control (that would be bad for our diets!). It promotes the idea that gradual improvements in eating habits and activity levels are the surest way to improve your health and to control high glucose levels your weight over the long term.
