Before we get into Melbourne’s coffee obsession and theatre scenes, it’s important to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land. The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation have cared for Country here for countless generations. The Yarra River — or Birrarung as it’s known to Elders — isn’t just a backdrop for joggers and rowing clubs; it’s a living artery, woven into Dreaming and cultural heritage.
Even today, the way the Victorian Government oversees the city’s expansion, water supply and urban planning is connected with the river. The city’s very groundwork, from regional drainage systems to flood protection and water restrictions, all hinge on how we treat Country. Acknowledging that past requires conscious travel — stopping to absorb the traditions, not just taking photos of the cityscape.
