Back when I initially kicked off leading Melbourne tours with Autopia Tours a long time ago, I came to understand this city has layers you won’t find in the tourist guides. I’ve long explored exploring the City of Melbourne, from the high-rise offices to the peaceful lawns of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, and every time I walk those streets, I notice something new. This blog is my perspective — part travel guide, part story, part resource — for anyone who wants to see Melbourne like a local with worn shoes, not a polished ad.
Before we get into Melbourne’s coffee obsession and theatre vibe, it’s important to respect the Traditional Owners of the land. The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation have protected Country here for tens of thousands of years. The Yarra River — or Birrarung as it’s traditionally known — isn’t just a backdrop for fitness lovers and rowers; it’s a vital stream, woven into creation stories and cultural practice.
Even today, the way the Victorian Government handles the city’s growth, water supply and urban planning is shaped by the river. The city’s very foundations, from regional drainage systems to flood protection and water restrictions, all hinge on how we relate to Country. Acknowledging that past requires conscious travel — pausing to listen to the narratives, not just snapping the skyline.
